What are the differences between cultured and natural pearls?

The vast majority of the worlds pearls are cultured pearls.  Natural pearls are very rare, and are usually only found at major, exclusive international auction houses. You will commonly see them priced and sold beyond millions of dollars.  They are formed inside a mollusk around a microscopic irritant without the aid of human hand.

What are the differences between freshwater and saltwater pearls?

Freshwater pearls are grown in non-saline environments in freshwater mussels, whereas saltwater pearls are grown in different species of saltwater mollusks.  Freshwater pearls are produced in higher quantities and varieties than saltwater pearls, making the prices more affordable.  Saltwater pearls are generally larger and rounder than their freshwater counterparts.

How often should I have my pearls restrung?

Pierre&Harry pearls are individually hand knotted with high-quality silk thread.  You should have your pearls restrung periodically regardless of how often you wear your Pierre&Harry pearls.  When you notice the silk string becoming loose as it stretches over time, and the pearls can move slightly between the knots, it is time to have you pearls restrung.  This is normal for all pearl jewelry.  We offer restringing.  Please contact us for details.

How do I care for my pearls?

Please remember the first rule of pearl care  --  last on, first off.  This means never put anything on after you have put on your pearls.  Hair products, perfume and makeup can all harm the pearls’ natural luster.

  • Do not use a silver cleaner on pearl jewelry or place pearls in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner.
  • Do not use any abrasive cleaners with your pearls, as they can dull the pearls’ natural luster as well.
  • Do not wear your Pierre&Harry pearls in the ocean, pool or hot tub, sauna, bath or shower.  If your pearls ever do get wet, be sure to immediately lay them flat until they are completely dry to keep the silk string from stretching.

What product is safe to use in caring for my Pierre&Harry pieces?

Lavish is a non-toxic foaming cleanser that is safe and easy to use on everything from pearls and opals, to diamonds. It is also safe for all gems and metals. Lavish is available at our retail location in Naples, or www.pierreandharry.com.
